Rising Leaders: Be a premissleverandør and get yourself some handlingsrom

Rising Leaders: Be a premissleverandør and get yourself some handlingsrom

Rising Leaders participants and AmCham members were joined by Curt Rice of Oslo Metropolitan University for a virtual afterwork session.

Originally from Rochester, MI, Dr. Rice only intended to go to Norway for one year but ended up staying for the last 30 years and becoming the first non-Norwegian to be at the helm of an institution for higher education in Norway.

Dr. Rice shared how his career development has been driven by his conviction that discovery of new knowledge, research and education are essential to improving society. Making universities better, therefore, has the potential to make societies better. Yet at the same time, he sees growth in science and research skepticism – and the increased responsibility of research advocates.

Leadership as a Tool to Reach Your Goals

Dr. Rice believes that those who want to lead should always ask themselves: What do you want to do and what will it take to make it happen? In his opinion, leadership is a tool for accomplishing something, not simply a goal in itself.

Don’t go into leadership because you think you will be a good leader. Go into leadership because you have something you want to get done. Leadership will give you handlingsrom.

He says the most important step when preparing for a leadership role is to become a premissleverandør* – define what you want to get done and get people to buy into that. This in turn gives you handlingsrom.* The reason to get into a leadership position is to create space to achieve goals

*Handlingsrom – space for action.

*Premissleverandør – contributor to policy formulation.

Diversity & Multicultural Leadership in Norway

Dr. Rice is preoccupied with gender balance & diversity in higher education and leads Norway’s Committee on Gender Balance and Diversity in Research. He is proud to say that over 50% of professors at OsloMet are women, but that home office has shown a dramatic decrease in research submitted by female researchers, which is why he believes these women should be invited back to the office first.

When questioned on multicultural diversity in Norwegian higher education, Dr. Rice says there is diversity in Norway, but in his opinion, almost all the diversity is imported. Very few leaders are children of immigrants, from his perspective he sees a lot of PhD students but not yet professors. He is optimistic that the next generation of leaders will be more diverse. He also sees that companies are becoming more interested in having diverse workforces.

As a foreigner himself, Curt quickly found that Norway is a very network-based society. He feels that some criticisms of him were perhaps harder because he was not Norwegian, though quoting Churchill when explaining that focusing on the pushback and criticism would not help him get to where he wanted to go.

He personally loves being a foreigner, because it gives him a little extra room to voice his opinions. The Rising Leader participants themselves represent 16 different countries with a majority growing up outside of Norway.

Norway Sees Dramatic Drop in Interest for Arctic Oil Exploration

Interest in oil exploration in the Norwegian Arctic has dropped dramatically following years of disappointing drilling results.

Only seven oil companies applied for new acreage in the Barents Sea in the latest licensing round, down from 26 in a similar round in 2013. The continued decline will be a blow to the government, which had offered 125 new blocks in eight frontier regions of the Barents.

Economic perspectives by Øystein Olsen, Governor, Norges Bank

Annual address by Governor Øystein Olsen to the Supervisory Council of Norges Bank on Thursday, 18 February 2021.

One year ago, I stood here and delivered the annual address to 300 guests. This year is different. This evening there are no guests physically present at the central bank. The contrast with last year could hardly be greater.

The same also goes for the theme running through this evening’s speech – the Covid-19 pandemic. Not a trace of it can be found in last year’s speech. Yet, contagion was lurking right outside our borders. We sensed that something was brewing. Norges Bank was in the process of revising down its economic forecasts. The employees at our Shanghai office had been sent home, yet we did not foresee how far-reaching the outbreak in Wuhan would be. Two weeks after delivering last year’s speech the first case was recorded in Norway – soon thereafter, Norway went into lockdown.

AmCham Mentorship Program: Season Finale & Starting Anew!

AmCham Mentorship Program: Season Finale & Starting Anew!

“The capability to rapidly change strategy” has been crucial for Benedikte Sørensen’s team during the pandemic. As Regional Sales Director at Radisson Hotel Group, Benedikte has responsibility for 16 hotels across the country. Hard booking data are what she and her team thrive upon these days, preferring to leave virtual teambuilding “fun stuff” exercises for later.

Joined by fellow Mentorship Program participants, representing a record 24 participating AmCham Patron member companies, Benedikte was the first leader to candidly present during the recent program finale.

A Virtual Experience

This, the fifth iteration of AmCham’s popular nine-month program, kicked off virtually in April with leadership presentations from Aksel Reksten of GE Healthcare and Anette Fuglesang of RiskPoint. The program’s midway meeting took place, incredibly, off screen and in person with DNV’s Thomas Vogth-Eriksen and Abbvie’s Kirsti Nyhus sharing their leadership perspectives.

Throughout the program, one-on-one sessions have focused upon networking with intent, team leadership, communication skills, reverse mentoring, workplace motivation, and conflict resolution. Based off of feedback from our mentees, and the unprecedented circumstances of 2020, we invited representatives from Radisson Hotel Group and Equinor to join us in our contemplation of leadership through challenging times.

Shaping Policy Outcomes

Equinor’s Vice President of Political and Public Affairs, Geir Westgaard, spoke to both his many years with Equinor, as well as to his mid-career pivot from government. Spanning Norway, the US, the UK, and Brussels, his story was one of the importance of intellectual curiosity and cultivating a strong network.

Speaking to the duality of networking as both a learned skill and a natural talent, Westgaard highlighted the value of communication. “Never underestimate the power of communication. It is not what you know but how you effectively communicate it that matters.”

A New Season – Register Now!

With many of this season’s mentors already committing to the ’21-22 Mentorship Program, we are excited to be underway in planning and preparing for the next cohort of mentors and mentees, with a kick-off planned for April 2021.

If the ‘20-21 program taught us one thing, it is the importance of thoughtful strategy at all stages of a career. The AmCham Mentorship Program offers a venue for delving more deeply into this mental exercise by offering both a sparring partner and thought-provoking group sessions. If you are interested in joining the ’21-22 Mentorship Program, we would be happy to have you. Please keep in mind that only Patron Member companies nominating both a mentor and a mentee may participate.

About the AmCham Mentorship Program

With its unique cross-industry orientation and global approach, the AmCham Mentorship Program offers a dynamic, internationally-minded arena for leadership development. The program, now in its fifth year, pairs emerging corporate talent with seasoned executives from AmCham Patron-level member companies. The result: a collaborative arena that fosters improvement and reflection, prepares young leaders for the challenges of the international marketplace, and forges bonds between AmCham member companies.
