Icelandair will officially launch seasonal service from Kansas City International Airport (MCI) with flight FI840 departing at 5:15PM local time. This historic event marks the first trans-Atlantic flight from the iconic MCI airport. Icelandair’s seasonal non-stop service from Kansas City to Iceland will operate three days a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, with easy connections to and from more than 25 destinations in Europe.

The festivities around the inaugural flight will include a ribbon cutting ceremony in the newly renovated departure lounge with authentic Kansas City BBQ, Icelandic Hot Dogs and a picture-worthy cake served to passengers. On hand will be Geir Haarde, Iceland’s Ambassador to the United States; Björgólfur Jóhannsson, President and CEO, Icelandair; Mayor Sly James, City of Kansas City, Missouri; and Pat Klein, Director of Aviation, City of Kansas City, Missouri. As the spectacular Hekla Aurora plane taxis to the runway, the City of Kansas City, Fire Department’s Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting trucks will send off the flight with a spectacular arched water salute.

For this exciting day, Icelandair will be flying their special northern lights livery, Hekla Aurora, with a northern lights theme, inside and out of the aircraft. The new seasonal route will continue operation through September using a 183-seat Boeing 757-200 aircraft, featuring Icelandair’s updated cabin with more legroom, in-flight entertainment, and gate-to-gate WiFi. Icelandair has also implemented a new fare structure allowing passengers to customize their fare based on their needs with service levels ranging from Economy Light to Saga Class. Return flights to Kansas City will be operated on Tuesdays, Fridays and Mondays.
