US Department of Defense: US-Norway Security Relationship Robust, Growing, Esper Says

Defense Secretary Dr. Mark T. Esper welcomed Norwegian Defense Minister Frank Bakke-Jensen to the Pentagon for talks on the U.S.-Norway partnership and the way forward for the NATO alliance.

Bakke-Jensen and Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg visited U.S. Marines and sailors in North Carolina and Virginia yesterday. Bakke-Jensen said he enjoyed meeting the Marines — many of whom deployed to Norway — and specifically cited the establishment of the U.S. 2nd Fleet in Norfolk as a concrete example of the U.S. commitment to Europe.

“The security relationship between the United States and Norway is robust and only continues to grow,” Esper said at the beginning of today’s Pentagon meeting. “As co-founders of NATO, we share similar priorities, similar values of democracy and human rights and the desire to invest in a stronger alliance.”

CNN: Prime Minister Erna Solberg and Palau President Tommy Remengesau Jr. say look to the ocean for climate change solutions

Humanity is exacting a terrible toll on the ocean. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) will publish its Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate later this week. Its overarching message will be that global warming, combined with the negative impacts of numerous other human activities, is devastating our ocean, with alarming declines in fish stocks, the death of our reefs, and sea level rise that could displace hundreds of millions of people. But there is a glimmer of hope — there is now overwhelming scientific evidence that the ocean can be a potent force in stabilizing the climate and building a secure future for everyone.

Ocean-based climate solutions could deliver as much as 21% of the emissions reductions needed to limit global warming to no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius by 2050. These reductions could amount to 11.8 gigatons of carbon dioxide equivalent, or CO2e — a standard unit that measures the impact of greenhouse gases in relation to the effects of CO2. This figure is greater than the current emissions from all coal-fired power plants worldwide.

Bloomberg: Richest Scandinavians Are in a Row Over How to Get $2.2 Billion

The richest Scandinavians are having a budget dispute involving Norway’s worst terrorist and a capsized warship.

The row started after Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg proposed an “under the line” budget item to cover the estimated 19 billion kroner ($2.2 billion) it will cost to replace a navy frigate that collided with a tanker and ran aground last year and to resurrect the government offices destroyed in Anders Behring Breivik’s 2011 terror attack.
