Tech Talent Network: Navigating Technology Innovation and the Digital Workplace

AmCham’s Tech Talent Network recently gathered engaged member participants at BI Norwegian Business School for an inspiring and forward-looking session on the future of tech and “Creating a Hybrid Workplace that Works”.

We were fortunate to hear from software engineer and former VP of Technology Exploration at DNB, Anne Karen Aanonli, who recently returned from DNB’s Palo Alto Representative Office. Aanonli shared key insights and reflections from her time in Silicon Valley, discussing the opportunities that arise by being on the ground in the region’s innovative ecosystem of universities, capital, participating banks, law firms, and a vibrant culture of networking.

The Palo Alto office has served both as a listening post and a source of fresh inspiration, fostering partnerships, awareness, and network building for DNB and Aanonli’s team at NewTechLab in Oslo, who work to explore the technologies of tomorrow.

We also welcomed Professor Sut I Wong, head of BI’s Department of Communication and Culture and co-founder of the Nordic Centre for Internet and Society. Professor Wong presented fascinating insights on leadership in digitalized workspaces, highlighting both the benefits and challenges of remote and hybrid work. Particularly how forced flexibility has increased autonomy and productivity for some, while also leading to more frequent meetings, increased workloads, and a sense of isolation, especially among younger employees.

Professor Wong emphasized the importance of intentionally designing “models of communication” to bridge gaps in media use, overcome coordination issues, and avoid “information fault lines” that can undermine team cohesion. Thoughtful choices about when and how to communicate, selecting the right channels, and fostering genuine engagement are critical to navigating today’s increasingly digital work environments.
